OTAKU Series by Cecile Maxi ('23): A review of Assassination Classroom.

Life lessons come in Weird Situations!

Welcome to the Assassination Classroom where the mission of the students is to kill their teacher, in order to save the world. It’s common that students hold grudges over a professor for a bad grade, or for too many assignments; but killing a teacher is a bit extreme even in the anime world.

At first, I didn’t know what to expect about this anime, Assassination Classroom: I thought the whole anime was going to be something cruel, with a lot violence and, to be honest, I was not interested in watching something like that. However, one of my friends convinced me to give it a try and I did, and here’s my opinion about it.

A year before Korosensei began teaching Class E, the moon was destroyed, leaving the world with only a crescent moon. Korosensei is a giant yellow octopus who is responsible for what happened to the moon, but he’s also the teacher of Class E. The students of Class E are responsible for killing Korosensei and they only have a year to complete the mission, or the Earth will be destroyed. This unconventional mission has to be completed in the classroom or outside. But Korosensei, because of his high speed, is unattainable, even with the special bullets that were designed to kill him. It is easier to kill him between two lessons or in the middle of the street with a lot of people around.

While watching the Assassination Classroom I never expected to learn life lessons. But this anime denounces social injustices. The students of Class E live in a very rigid caste system: they were in a classroom separated from the rest of the school. All the students of Class E at some point in their lives had a phase where they decided to be rebellious in order to be in control of their lives, which caused them to be excluded from the rest of the group because of their bad grades or their misbehavior. The Education that Class E receives is not the best and the reason why is to keep Class E on the lowest level, content in their status quo; by teaching them how to be assassins, the director of the school is making sure they will always be at the bottom. But in the anime Assassination Classroom, they don’t only teach how to kill but also, how to live.

I really enjoyed Assassination Classroom because of the amazing story line and the humor which was unexpected, and the fact that it was only two seasons, which was practical to watch during school. On a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account the story line, humor, fights, graphic and suspense Assassination Classroom is an 8 for me.
