TOOBA KHALID (‘23), EDITOR IN CHIEF & SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

I am Tooba Khalid. Here at St. Joe's I am currently a sophomore and majoring in Psychology. I was born and raised in Pakistan and have been living in the United States for the last 7 years. My favorite hobby would be drawing, especially self portraits. Some of my work experiences which I am proud of are that I participated in service learning volunteer programs and worked as Intern at Maimonide Medical Center. Through my work I have gained professionalism skills including communication, time management and adaptability. In my free time, I like to do the cleaning and drawing.This semester I appreciate the opportunity to work with ACES blog and social media platform.

DARA DESROSIERS (‘20), EDITOR IN CHIEF & SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

My name is Dara Desrosiers, currently a senior, majoring in psychology and minoring in chemistry. I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and am fluent in 3 languages: Creole, French and English. Aside from investing my time and energy in academics, I am a cross country runner, a peer-tutor in Statistics, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and Intro Psychology. This semester, I am the editor in chief and social media manager of the ACES blog. In partnership with a few of my friends, I serve as an E-board member in both the Psychology club and Exchange Club. In my spare time, I love watching comedy movies and I enjoy spending time with family. After graduation, I hope to enter medical school and pursue a career in cardiology. I’m really looking forward to working closely with ACES and managing all social media platforms.

EKRAM ALROWMEIM ('19), EDITOR-IN CHIEF

Ekram Alrowmeim was born in Sanaa, the capital city of Yemen. She moved to the United States in June 2012. She attended Sunset Park High School in Brooklyn, New York. Currently she is majoring in Mathematics Computer Science, and minoring in Political Science. Her hope for the future is to combine her passion for human rights and her interest in technology to make change, and create something that benefits the world. Being an Editor in Chief to the ACES blog, Ekram hopes to encourage ACES students to engage in a thoughtful global conversation through sharing their writings and artistic skills.

NAOMI MOREIRA ('19), CONTRIBUTING VISUAL ARTIST

Naomi Moreira was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and came to the United States in 2012. She attended Manhattan Bridges High School and is now proud to be a student at St. Joseph's College. She is a work study student within the art department on campus and says, "I like to draw because is a different and easy way of expression for me, because it expresses what I love, like, or hate just in one simple image. Also, drawing releases my stress and allows me to distract myself from the upsetting things in life. I learned by myself how to draw since I was very little, and I am proud to say that." 

RONO HEM ('19), CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Rono Hem was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh where he also attended St. Joseph’s higher secondary school. He came to the United States as an international college student in 2015. A biology major with aspirations of becoming a researcher, he still finds himself fascinated with writing. Rono finds writing to be a cathartic experience and wishes to bring depth and emotion into his work as he progresses.

Psychology major (I may never know until I graduate). Suffer from regular bouts of boredom that I like to call writer's block to feel better about myself and, occasionally, inspiration mixed with a semblance of productivity.
What's interesting (?) about me:
I can play the guitar.
I can read six languages. 
It took me 3 weeks to write this.

Arturo Olea ('18), Site Manager 

Arturo Olea was born in Higüey, the capital city of the eastern La Altagracia Province in the Dominican Republic. He moved to the United States in 2012 to study Architecture. While attending Manhattan Bridges High School, school of Engineering and Information Technology, a new passion for computers emerged.  At Manhattan Bridges, he was encouraged to take advanced computer classes and it was these classes that inspired him to become a Mathematics and Computer Science major with a minor in Business Administration at St. Joseph’s College. He’s an active leader of a new computer club at SJC, and he is also a student worker for the Art Department.

Xiaotong Jiang ('19)  Contributing Artist 

Xiaotong (Elaine) Jiang was born in Jiangsu, China in 1998. She moved to New York City in June 2015. She is currently a sophomore at Saint Joseph’s College and majoring in Business Administration. Painting, dancing and reading are some of her hobbies. Elaine believes that art builds a bridge of communication between people’s hearts. “Live your dream” is her belief and persistence. With the passion to experience different cultures and find diverse inspiration, she hopes to work around the world after graduation. Currently, she is studying for her Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. 

Argenis Ovalles ('17), Contributing Writer 2015-2017

Argenis Ovalles ('17) was born in Manhattan, New York, to Dominican-Italian parents. He has been in speech therapy since age two. At the age of five, he moved to Santo Domingo de Guzmán. He was raised there until the age of thirteen when he came back to New York and attended Manhattan Bridges High School. While a student at MBHS he became interested in robotics and biology, and pursued a summer internship in his sophomore year with Dr. Ethel Tobach. The renowned scientist told him about the stuttering organization SAY.org (formerly Our Time), which gave him his first taste of writing and theater. This eventually inspired him to become an English major and a theater minor at St. Joseph's College, Brooklyn campus. He's also an active brother of the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity and a work-study student in the Campus Ministry Office. 

Klara Kurti ('17), Editor in Chief (2016-2017)

Klara Kurti was born in Diber, Albania in the summer of 1995. After living in Albania for six years, her family moved to New York City for a better life. With a curiosity to explore the unknown, Klara wishes to one day travel the world and experience all the different cultures and people. She currently attends Saint Joseph's College and is majoring in Psychology. "Whether it's writing my personal thoughts in my journal every night after a long day, or writing papers for class, writing has become a great passion in my life." Being an Editor in Chief to the ACES blog, Klara hopes to share her thoughts with the rest of the student body and hopefully inspire others to allow their inner writer sides to shine through them. 

Tenzin Yingsal ('16) Contributing Writer (2014-2016), Managing Editor (2015-2016), Editor in Chief (2014-2015)                                                    

Tenzin was named by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. She is Tibetan, from Mustang, Nepal. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 11 with her family. Since then, Tenzin has been living in New York City. While at SJC, she majored in Biology with an interest in medicine. She says, “When I am not glued to my laptop whether I am working on a school paper or just surfing the web, I enjoy volunteering at hospitals. Hospitals offer me the opportunity to discover and learn so much, as well as enjoy my time there.” With this website, Tenzin explored the creative outlet of developing a blog with students who share similar interests as her. 

Juan Cerda ('16) Contributing Writer (2013-2015), Site Manager (2014-2015)                                   

Juan Cerda was born in the province of Dajabón, Dominican Republic. Born on a Tuesday Valentine’s Day, Juan is filled with inner love and self-appreciation. He moved to the United States in the year 2009 in search of a brighter, heart-calling future. At Saint Joseph’s College he explored the field of Human-Computer interaction within the disciplines of Psychology and Computer Science. “It is the intrinsic dependence between technology and the human mind that draws my attention. I’ve encountered algorithms in my studies, and they have taught me that accurate results only occur when one has the right instructions.“ As an ACES student, Juan was able to initiate the academic enrichment of his undergraduate degree and is now working in the field of technology in California.

Kevin Chen ('18) Contributing Artist (Fall 2015)    

Kevin Chen was born in the province of FuJian, China. Born under the sign of Leo, Kevin was filled with self-respect and an eagerness to do well. When he was thirteen years old, he moved to the United States with his parents. As an Asian American, Jeremy Lin serves as a role model to him. “It is a fun thing when you try to pursue something others think you can’t achieve, but then you really make it at last. I believe that is the greatest feeling of accomplishment.”

Anna Marienko ('15) Managing Editor and Contributing Writer (2013-2015)         

Anna Marienko was born in Nizhnevartovsk, Russia. When she was three years old, her parents decided to move to Minsk, Belarus. There she attended a music school that was held and organized by the local Mikhail Glinka Music College. She spent 8 years studying the theory and history of music, taking piano and choir lessons. At 16, Anna moved to the United States as an international student, finally getting her permanent residency in 2013. Anna is actively involved in youth advocacy, having served as a Representative for both IMCS-Pax Romana and Major Group for Children and Youth at the United Nations, work that she acknowledges as challenging yet fulfilling. Anna graduated in 2015; she majored in English and minored in Political Science. She now attends Cornell Law.

Emmanuel Uwadiegwu ('14) Site Manager (2013-2014)                                         

Emmanuel Uwadiegwu was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He is a 2014 Computer Information Systems graduate. He moved to the United States for college in 2010 and plans to further his education by going for his Master's in Computer Science. In addition to computers, Emmanuel enjoys philosophy and music. He was the President of the Philosophy Club from 2011-14 and also hopes to continue to further his knowledge in philosophy post-graduation.
