NY Favorites from Ana Phanjavidze ('23)

The pandemic has been a surreal experience, and as we struggle to adjust to the ever-changing new world, ACES questioned students about their favorite spots to visit in New York. Are you seeking new locations to visit or things to try? Read on to find out what Ana advises!

Q: What is your favorite bookstore that you have visited and why?

Ana: My favorite bookstore is Barnes and Noble because first of all, they have a great selection of books but also they sell interesting decors that can be helpful for reading. However, I also enjoy buying books online as it can save you so much time and sometimes money too.

Q: Where do you go if you are stressed and want to relax?

Ana: Whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed, I love to go to the nearby parks. I love nature and it helps me to relax but also you can see so many interesting people and activities that are happening in the parks here. For example, this Sunday I spent 2 hours in Washington Square Park just observing people, how they were dressed or what conversations they were engaging in. I got to see a girl perform a contemporary dance choreography. You can always see something interesting going on there.

Q: What is your favorite place to hang out with friends?

Ana: One of my favorite places to hang out with my friends is in Soho. My friends and I usually go there for shopping and then end up walking to Little Italy or Chinatown to have lunch.

Q: What is your favorite winter activity in the city?

Ana: My favorite winter activity in the city is going to Bryant’s Park. They usually have a Christmas village, ice-skating rink, and a café where you can get some hot drinks to keep you warm.

Q: Where do you visit during the summer?

Ana: During the summer I spend more time out in nature. I love visiting Brooklyn Botanical Garden. It is so peaceful and beautiful. I love Coney Island. It is fun to go to the amusement park and admire the view of the ocean.

Q: Do you have recommendations for students that are new to New York?

Ana: I would recommend enjoying this city as much as they can. In my first year, I used to avoid going out to spend more time on my studies. After spending a whole year back home, I realized that I didn’t have any significant memories from New York and I regretted that. Now I am trying to experience this city at its fullest, go out as much as I can, explore new places that I have never seen, and make some amazing memories. Going to college here is not only about studying, it is a whole new experience that involved exploring the city and finding your own connection to it. I would recommend keeping that work-life balance so you can form that connection as soon as you can.
